Frequently Ask Questions (FAQ)

What exactly is Project ARES?

Project ARES (Advocating Resilience through Education for Specific Needs) is a youth-led program in the Philippines and Laos. It focuses on making disaster preparedness education practical and accessible, specifically ensuring that youth with and without disabilities are leading the way rather than just sitting in a classroom.

Who can join the project?

The project is designed for young people. We are looking for at least 60 direct participants from the Philippines and Laos. This includes youth with disabilities and those with basic to intermediate experience in community leadership who want to take disaster resilience seriously.

How long does the project run?

It’s a fast-paced initiative. We are operating for 2.5 months, starting October 15 and wrapping up by December 31, 2025.

Is this all happening online or in person?

A bit of both. We are holding in-person trainings in the Philippines and Laos for hands-on leadership skills. At the same time, we’re launching an online learning hub with videos and modules so youth across the region can learn independently.

Who are the partners involved?

We aren't doing this alone. In the Philippines, we’re working with Kasali Tayo, AKAPIN Inc., and the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific, among others. In Laos, our main partners are the Association for Disabled Development of Pdda Xiengkhouang and volunteers from Lone Buffalo.

Does it cost anything to participate or use the materials?

No. Everything—from the in-person training sessions to the digital toolkit and the online learning hub—is free. We want to remove as many barriers as possible so the information gets to the people who need it.

Can I participate if I don’t have any prior disaster training?

Yes. While we look for youth with basic to intermediate leadership experience, the goal is to build capacity. If you’re motivated to help your community and willing to learn, you’re a good fit.
